Program Reflection

LeADERS is a program offered at ODU that gives students the opportunity to apply what's been learned in the classroom to real world experiences and showcase their skills through a professional ePortfolio. My participation in LeADERS has been a rewarding experience. Through its focus on Leadership, Applied Work Based Learning, Diversity, Entrepreneurship, Research, and Service Learning, I had the opportunity to engage in high impact learning experiences that have deepened my understanding of leadership and reinforced the skills I have learned through my recreational therapy courses. I have discovered that leadership, like recreational therapy, is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and meeting people where the yare. Through the courses I've taken while in LeADERS, I've learned how important it is to create inclusive spaces where all perspectives are valued. I've also realized how interconnected my personal values are with the work I hope to do after graduation.

One of the most challenging moments during the program was learning how to navigate group dynamics in service learning projects and class assignments. Balancing different communication styles and ensuring everyone was heard helped me learn how important patience, adaptability, and communication are. These are also skills that will be invaluable throughout my career as a recreational therapists and an occupational therapist. The most powerful moments of learning came when I was able to apply the skills I've gained in facilitating RT interventions through my senior internship. Being able to see first hand the impact RT has on individuals and how planning meaningful activities improves quality of life and wellbeing has reinforced my appreciation of the field.

The most important lesson I have learned from this program is that leadership is an ongoing process of learning, reflection, empathy, and advocacy. If I were to go through this program again, I would take more advantage of the resources and opportunities offered, step into leadership roles sooner, and seek more connections with others in the program outside of my classmates. I truly believe my participation in LeADERS has prepared me to be a well rounded, thoughtful, and engaged recreational therapist.
